Laboratory Diamonds

With over 35+ years of experience, we know diamonds. Diamonds have been one of the most sought after gems for use in Jewelry but everyone may have a different idea as to which diamond - mined or lab created - is best suited for them. We aim to help you decide which one will best meet your needs and budget.

These are some of the most common questions which our customers ask.

What are laboratory grown diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are diamonds that are made in a controlled lab environment. They have the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds, with the only difference being their point of origin.

Are lab diamonds real diamonds?

Although grown by scientists instead of created in the earth's crust, lab diamonds are absolutely real diamonds— Even expert gemologists can't tell the difference with the naked eye.

How do they grow lab diamonds?

Lab-created Diamonds There are two processes labs use to grow diamonds - High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). The diamond seed is placed in a sealed chamber and heated to around 800 degrees Celsius. The chamber is filled with a carbon rich-gas, like Methane, and other gases.

Are lab grown diamonds certified?

Yes. GIA, IGI Grading Labs offer laboratory-grown diamond grading reports using the same color and clarity boundaries as the grading system for natural diamonds, but with fewer quality grade categories. IGI issues grading reports are more common.

Can you tell the difference between lab and natural diamond?

There is no visual difference in Lab Created Diamonds vs Natural Diamonds. They sparkle the same, have the same types of color and clarity, and can come in the same sizes and shapes. The lack of nitrogen is one way gemologists can identify Lab Created Diamonds vs Natural Diamonds

To the naked eye – it's impossible to distinguish a lab-grown diamond from a mined diamond. It's highly unlikely that a jeweler – even one that is highly skilled – could determine if a diamond is lab-grown or mined.

How long does it take to grow a lab grown diamond?

Lab-grown diamonds take approximately 6 to 10 weeks to develop in a laboratory. Diamonds close enough to earth's surface to be mined today were formed in nature between 1 billion to 3.3 billion years ago.

Should I buy a lab created diamond?

The first and most often cited benefit of lab-grown diamonds is their environmental sustainability and price. With current technology, the price of a lab-grown diamond is substantially less than natural diamonds. Savings of between 20-50% (depending on quality) over its mined counterpart are common.
